| Tips for Great Senior Portraits Seniors are famous for bringing a vast range of clothing options, from formalwear, to traditional, casual, uniforms, and trendy styles. Whatever you bring to be photographed in, take the appropriate time to consider how flattering it is, how well it reflects your style, and if it is in keeping with your personality. Put some time into your selections. Don't just grab the first three outfits in your closet on the way out the door! Fitted clothing photographs better than baggy or tight fitting clothes. Try choosing outfits with longer sleeves. Sleeveless styles can make your upper arms look fuller than they are. Avoid experimenting with trendy hairstyles the day before your appointment. If the result isn't something you absolutely love, then you won't absolutely love your portraits either. Choose complimentary colors that you feel confident wearing. As a general rule, white adds weight and shows wrinkles, while black shows little detail at all. If you are considering black and white photographs, black or very dark tops and bottoms work best. It creates the high contrast that really draws attention to your face and skin. Remember to dress head to toe! You might want to accessorize differently each outfit you bring, from jewelry, to belts, socks and shoes. If in doubt, call us or visit the studio a few days before your session to get background ideas, clothing suggestions, a studio tour, or just to peek at what other seniors have done. A visit is guaranteed to spark great ideas, and help prepare you as well for your big day! Men: Get a fresh haircut about one week before your portraits. If you will be wearing a dark shirt for your portraits, make sure your undershirt is also dark. A white t-shirt triangle will be very obvious under a darker shirt. Women: Fitted clothing with long sleeves will create a more flattering portrait than baggy clothing or sleeveless styles. Apply makeup as you would normally wear it during the day. It is not necessary to apply more or heavier makeup than usual. Also, please do not experiment with a new shade of lipstick the day of your portraits! White straps or printed undergarments might still be visible through thin clothing. Neutral undergarments work best. Make sure they fit comfortably and do not show any lines in the clothing you will wear. Your nails will show! Both finger and toenails need attention, especially if you will be wearing sandals (some casual and outdoor photographs can be done barefoot). If your polish is colored, make sure it is in great shape (no chips or wearing). Choose your polish color well, as lime green might look great with your sundress, but not so hot with your khakis and blouse. Neutrals and soft colors work best. |
